Melon planting for export

Melon is one of the most important export crops of Costa Rica's North Pacific, and one of those that has given us the most experience. At Agrícola LG Calderón we plant it in the dry season, when the region's dry weather and high sunlight produce large, sweet fruit with good shelf life.

How we manage the crop

1. Land preparation. Soil analysis, planting beds and drip irrigation lines to water precisely and use water efficiently.
2. Planting. Planned in staggered lots to keep a continuous harvest through the season.
3. Crop management. Fertigation, bee pollination, pest and disease monitoring and field records for traceability.
4. Harvest at the right sugar level. Melons are picked when they reach the Brix and maturity the destination market requires.
5. Packing. Grading by size, cleaning and packing in export boxes, ready for loading into refrigerated containers.
