How to store corn silage bags so they don't spoil
Published: 02 sept 2026 · Agrícola LG Calderón
Where to keep the bags, how long they last sealed and opened, how to recognize good silage and what to do with a damaged bag.

Short answer: keep the bags sealed, in the shade and on pallets, and use each bag within 24–48 hours after opening. Properly sealed and unpunctured, bagged corn silage keeps for several months; once air gets in, it starts heating up and losing quality.
Where to keep them
- Shade and roof. Sun heats the bag and speeds up secondary fermentation. A shed, storeroom or at least a thick tarp.
- On pallets or plastic. Avoid direct contact with damp ground.
- Away from rodents and sharp objects. A punctured bag lets air in and spoils from that point.
- Low stacks. No more than 3–4 bags high so the bottom ones don't burst.
How long it lasts
| Bag condition | Approximate shelf life |
|---|---|
| Sealed, intact, in the shade | Several months |
| Sealed but in the sun | Weeks (quality drops) |
| Opened, well covered | 1–2 days |
| Opened and exposed to air | Less than 1 day |
How to tell if it is good
- Good: sweet-sour smell (fermented, like mild vinegar), yellow-green color, moist but not dripping, at ambient temperature.
- Doubtful: strong alcohol or "sharp" smell, dark patches, warm to the touch.
- Bad: white, grey or pink mold, putrid or ammonia smell, black color. Do not feed it.
Recommended routine
- Open only the bags you will use that day.
- Scoop with a clean shovel and re-close the bag by folding the mouth and placing a weight on it.
- Feed in clean troughs and remove leftovers the next day.
- Rotate: use the oldest bags first.

Frequently asked questions
How long does bagged corn silage last?
Sealed, unpunctured and in the shade it keeps for several months. Once opened, use it within 24–48 hours.
What if the bag is opened or torn?
Air gets in and the silage starts heating and re-fermenting. Use it the same day, or discard it if it already has mold or a putrid smell.
How do I know if the silage has gone bad?
White, grey or pink mold, a putrid or ammonia smell and black color mean it is spoiled. A mild sweet-sour smell and yellow-green color are normal.
Can I keep the bags in the sun?
Not recommended: heat speeds up spoilage. Keep them under a roof or tarp, on pallets.
